Come again some other day

What a drag. Struggled all month to get some time off today to see the game today. Went up there, sat in the freezing rain for 3 hours only to have the game postponed until tomorrow. Oh well, I'll just try, try again.

Here, At Last

Today is the Final Opening Day at the historic Yankee Stadium. I've been looking forward to this for a long time. It's going to be a hectic day. I'm up early to head downtown to work by 8'o'clock. I'll be there for a few hours before jumping on a subway up to The Stadium. After all, or a least most of the game, I will retreat back to SoHo to finish up the day working until at least 9pm. A whirlwind and exhausting "only in New York" day. I can't wait!

I do like the Egg McMuffin. Maybe I'll try to get one today in tribute.

Herb Peterson came up with idea for the signature McDonald's breakfast item in 1972. He "was very partial to eggs Benedict," Fraker said, and worked on creating something similar. The egg sandwich consisted of an egg that had been formed in a Teflon circle with the yolk broken, topped with a slice of cheese and grilled Canadian bacon. It was served open-faced on a toasted and buttered English muffin.

Barack Obama: A More Perfect Union

I’m feeling sick today so while I have the time to write, I don’t have the energy. But briefly, I think the Obama speech on race was brilliant. He perfectly explained himself. He did not agree with all the comments of his pastor, much as we all don’t agree with the comments of friends and family’s all the time, but Obama still embraces the faith and hope that he gained from his church.
Barack Obama is truly the first 21st century politician. He talked to the American people as if we were intelligent adults capable of seeing things beyond one dimension. I hope enough people are able to follow him. Simple mindedness has ruined this country and given us a moron as President and elevated hate mongers like Rush Limbaugh to iconic status. Barack Obama is trying to explain the world in all it’s complexities. I just hope that enough Americans are able to understand his message and move away for the bumper sticker politics that has the United States on the verge of irrelevancy.

It's tough to think of two states more different than Wyoming and Mississippi.
But we won Wyoming on Saturday, and we just learned that we won Mississippi by a large margin tonight.
Between those two states, we picked up enough delegates to erase the gains by Senator Clinton last Tuesday and add to our substantial lead in earned delegates. And in doing so we showed the strength and breadth of this movement.
But just turn on the news and you'll see that Senator Clinton continues to run an expensive, negative campaign against us. Each day her campaign launches a new set of desperate attacks.
They're not just attacking me; they're attacking you.
Over the weekend, an aide to Senator Clinton attempted to diminish the overwhelming number of contests we've won by referring to places we've prevailed as "boutique" states and our supporters as the "latte-sipping crowd."
I'm not sure how those terms apply to Mississippi and Wyoming -- or Virginia, Iowa, Louisiana, or Idaho for that matter.
I know that our victories in all of these states demonstrate a rejection of this kind of petty, divisive campaigning.
But the fact remains that Senator Clinton's campaign will continue to attack us using the same old Washington playbook. And now that John McCain is the Republican nominee, we are forced to campaign on two fronts.

Eliot Mess

I have been working even more than normally so haven't gotten into the whole furor involving my Governor. Here are some quick thoughts...
-- If none of the tabloids used my headline "Eliot Mess" then shame on them for their lack of creativity. I'm guessing it is the most used headline but since I haven't see it anywhere I decided to use it myself.
-- I really don't care if someone uses high priced prostitutes. When it comes to sex scandals it is the hypocrisy (typically of right wing politicians preaching morality) that I criticise.
-- Spitzer did prosecute prostitution when he was Attorney General of the state. Pretty hypocritical.
-- Spitzer did run for Governor on cleaning up NY State government. Also, pretty hypocritical.
-- This is, by my count, the third controversy in 2 years for Eliot. Too many too soon.
-- I think he should resign for all those reasons.
-- Those outside of new York may not know that our Lt. Governor (soon to be Gov?) is not only African-American but he is also BLIND! I'm guessing that's a first in US History. (mandatory tasteless joke about the blind -- Lt. Governor Patterson has lost his sight ... but not his vision!

I have written a little about how much I am finding text messaging to be an effective and efficient way of communication. In fact, I am going to adjust my cell phone plan to downgrade the number of minutes I can call a month and increase the number of text messages I am allotted. (It is really unbelievable how difficult Sprint makes it to do this.) Reich Right On

Former Clinton administration Labor Secretary Robert Reich has what I call a "glass of water blog" that I read regularly. ( I call it that because while it can be very dry, if you read it with a glass of water you'll certainly get a lot out of it). In his latest entry he articulates what I fear is happening to the Democratic party.

The sad news is that whether the Clinton scorched-earth strategy ultimately succeeds or fails, it will have caused great harm. In the unlikely event it succeeds, the result will be a shame and not a little ironic. Barack Obama has breathed life into the Democratic Party, and into American politics, for the first time in forty years. Not since Robert Kennedy ran for president has America been so starkly summoned to its ideals; not since then has America -- including, especially, the nation's youth -- been so inspired. The Clintons would prefer to write off "Obamania" as a passing fad, but the reality is that idealism and inspiration are necessary preconditions for positive social change. Nothing happens in Washington unless Americans are energized and mobilized to make it happen. HRC's tactics are the old politics the nation is recoiling from -- internal division and national fear. This only serves to deepen Americans' cynicism about politics, and makes social change all the harder to achieve.

If you are reading this ... you made it through another week. After all is said and done, you've got to be happy about that.

"As far as I know"

Those four words, "as far as I know", spoken by Hillary Clinton the other day, show me that she is willing to do or say anything to become President. How horrible! I feel that her efforts to smear Barack Obama in this way disqualifies her from ever getting my vote. This "me-first" attitude is the exact OPPOSITE of the type of mentality we need in Washington today.

Why have these four words upset me so much? Well, they were said in response to a question about the false rumor going around that Barack Obama is or once was a Muslim. It is not true, he has said it was not true and no one has ever proven it was true. It is just a hateful whisper campaign by the political forces that have so damaged our nation. Rather than repudiate this (as even John McCain has) Hillary Clinton chose to try to use it to her advantage. Maybe it worked last night but it is still very, very wrong.

KROFT: You said you take Sen. Obama at his word that he's not a Muslim...

CLINTON: Right, right..

KROFT: …you don't believe that he's a Muslim.

CLINTON: No! No! Why would I? There's nothing to base that on, as far as I know.

The only reason she would say that is to keep this vicious rumor alive. Forget that Obama and Clinton are both Democrats. Forget that he has been a devout Christian for decades. I am just outraged that anyone who knows better would purposefully distort the truth in such a mean and calculating way. Shame on Hillary Clinton. She has not only gotten into the mud but proven herself to be exactly the same kind of "divide and conquer" politician as George W. Bush and Karl Rove. The United States cannot stand 4 more years of this type of mentality in Washington!

Barack Obama has his work cut out for him. It is never easy fighting against the forces of distortion and division, especially when they are in your own "house". Last night's Clinton victories, with the help of this type of dirty campaigning and all the Republican cross-over voters salivating at the change of facing her in the general election, may seem like a good thing today to Hillary supporters. But I assure you that it will not help her beat John McCain or bring America back from it's darkest hour. She has sacrificed a lot to get a few checks in the win column. Mostly, she has lost the respect of people who value the truth and have the desire to unify America through hope rather than through hate.

It's Over!

The apostle Paul wrote that, "I fought the good fight; I've finished the race; and I've kept the faith." And I believe tonight that one of the things that we will be able to say is not only that we fought the good fight and finished the race; we'd like to have finished it first, but we stayed in until the race was over. But I think, more importantly, we've kept the faith. And that for me has been the most important goal of all. Primary Decision

Another big Tuesday today. The election could be all wrapped up for both parties by this time tomorrow. First, the Democrats..... If Barack Obama sweeps the 4 states tonight, Hillary will probably drop out and he will easily win the Democratic nomination. The toughest states for him tonight will be Texas and especially Ohio. Clinton has a lead in the polls in Ohio and Texas seems too close to call. Even if she wins both states, it will be mathematically difficult for her to catch Barack Obama, but she will have some appearance of momentum that will justify (in her supporters eyes) to keep the fight going. Unless Obama has a total meltdown over the next couple months, he should still arrive at the convention with the majority of delegates and popular vote. But Clinton is hoping that a late surge will convince the Super-delegates to support her. Not very likely, but it is her only hope at this time.

As far as the GOP goes, tonight could be the end of the road for my dark horse favorite Mike Huckabee I've been disappointed at the near media blackout of his campaign over the past two weeks. I really think that if he were given equal time, he would probably defeat John McCain. I am not in any of the states voting today so I can't say what the local press is doing as far as covering Huckabee, but I hope he has been getting heard. Much like Barack Obama, the more Mike Huckabee is seen and heard, the more popular he gets. It's really a shame that it took so long for him to break through the crowd in the public mind. I'm certain that if the primaries were starting today, Huckabee would be the nominee. But now, he faces the ultimate of uphill battles. If Huckabee wins Texas and does very well in the other contests, he is still very much in the game. (Ironically more so than Clinton because of the unhappiness among the GOP base with John McCain). Let's hope that what has been happening on the ground in the way of press coverage has been more than what is apparent from here in New York. Otherwise, it could be the end of the 2008 road for my man Mike. It will be a sad thing indeed for me - someone who has been following and cheering on Huckabee for quite a longtime. He certainly has shown the ability to pull of the big surprise, so anything is possible. But it does have to happen for him tonight.
